Case Study: Matt (9th Grader)

Academic Needs

Matt is a 9th-grader who struggles with reading. During class, he refuses to participate in readings and engages in inappropriate behaviors that distract his peers. The teacher and special education ask the question, "Is Matt achieving in reading? How does Matt feel when he is required to complete reading tasks?" After the discussion and observation of Matt, the teacher and special education teacher realized that his decoding, reading comprehension, and writing skills are weak. This can affect his behavior in reading class because he does not want to be embarrassed in front of his peers for these struggles.

Behavior Needs

Data collections through anecdotal and latency recording indicate that Matt's transition to work is significantly delayed compared to his peers. His main triggers occur during oral reading periods and when instructed to submit homework. The collaborative assessment between the general and special education teachers raised critical questions regarding how Matt's frustration with literacy tasks fuels his defiance and negative peer interactions.
